— The Story Behind The Throne

A Yoruba sci-fi epic
three hundred years from now.

Dallas. Just after dawn. A military notification pulls Marcos Jackson into the Infinite Fate Advisor — and across the threshold into Yorubaland, where the Oyo Empire’s throne sits vacant and the ascension tournament has begun.

— The World

Yorubaland, three centuries reclaimed.

The narrative spans a distant Benin, Nigeria, and Togo — West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea — with frequent returns to historical memories of the 1300s through the 1800s. The future regions of Yorubaland have been reclaimed by overgrown nature and wildlife.

Oyo is a powerful Yoruba Empire known for its wealth from trade and its mighty cavalry and military. Shango’s Estate, Lagos, Ibadan, and Warri anchor the map. The Owner of the Palace — the Alaafin — rules from a throne that has, for the first time in centuries, gone empty.

— The Story

Owner of the Palace.

Owner of the Palace takes readers on an action-packed journey that begins in present-day Dallas and swiftly transitions to an underground training facility known as the Infinite Fate Advisor (IFA). Here, individuals known as Ascendants — genetically linked to an ancient African tribe — are trained to become rogue scholars and formidable warriors. The protagonist, Marcos, discovers he is one such Ascendant, with unique abilities, and is recruited to serve the powerful Oyo Empire, set three hundred years in the future.

As Marcos undergoes intense training, he forms alliances with other Ascendants — Osha, Otis, James, and Doc. Marcos soon learns he is not just any warrior, but the vessel for the Orisha of Thunder, Lightning, and Fire. His journey becomes a battle for survival as he confronts Ebro, an elder Orisha, in a conflict that threatens the societal hierarchy. Alongside this, a deadly ash virus looms — reminiscent of COVID-19 but with even more catastrophic effects on those unable to harness life’s natural energy, áshe.

“What you learn here will change you forever.
You will become both their greatest champion and opponent.”
— Ebro, Apex Orisha
— A Lexicon

The language of the world.

Four terms anchor the story. Knowing them sharpens every page.

Orisha
A divine spirit or being incarnated to assist humanity and guide them to be successful on Aye (Earth).
Alaafin
“Owner of the Palace.” The title of the Oba — the King.
Ifá
A divination system which makes use of infinite signs, texts, and calculations.
Áshe
The source of life’s natural energy and catalyst for change. Áshe also translates to “power, authority, command.” An Alaase is one who has learned, through training and initiation, to willfully effect change through áshe.

— From the Author

Why I wrote this.

M. L. Remy

As the author of Orishas: Owner of the Palace, discovering Yoruba mythology transformed my storytelling — inspiring me to create modern narratives that resonate with today’s readers. My debut novel explores themes of slavery, Nigerian deities, rebirth, and futuristic technology within a richly immersive world.

My writing style is vivid, introspective storytelling — pulling readers deep into suspense, action, and epic world-building. OOTP invites immersion in every scene.
